I read in a post somewhere that Bunta "could" work for TRD but I doubt it. I personally think that he got it from Tsuchiya Keichi because they are aquaintance's(sp?) rolleyes.gif . If anyone knows(or thinks) any differently please feel free to post.

I don't know what the hype is with that engine...yeah it's an awesome toyota 20V 4AGE race engine with ITB's that's been fully built to rev up to 11,000 rpm, but it's not like it's some rare engine that takes mad connections to get. If you have the money (which Bunta obviously did), you could have that thing easily built for you with exactly those specs or more...all it takes is serious money. In Japan, there exists a racing league comprised of only AE86's with crazy built up engines pretty much like the one in Bunta's 86, some even rev up to 12,000 rpm!!!...he probably got it from one of these race teams. If you got the money, you can probably have one of these teams build it for you but since Bunta obviously is old time friends with Tsuchiya, I would say that you're probably right in thinking that he had some way of getting the engine since Tsuchiya casually races in the AE86 cup as well for the TRD team.

Do you have any idea how much would be invested into those engines at all?

You are easily looking at 30K for a race built engine like that... easily.

i really doubt that he use the money to have it built cause in the anime he said he found it by accident so he prolly uses the money having it install and buy extra part that it needed

ive seen a 20 valve on the web for bout 500 dollars to import from japan, that is 500 before shipping, i dunno how much after......but ive also seen them go from 500 through the early thousand in price range. although im sure that bunta did a lil more than drop in an engine,

oh and sainz, i read sumtin bout 4a engines designed for racing, i read it in a compact car mag, i dun remember the specifics but it was the a series engine with a total face lift, they use them in little formula cars or something like that

A STOCK 20 valve for 500 yes and so what.

We are talking about a RACE prepped engine, not a single item is left standard.

that's a 20v ae111 TRD tuned race engine... not anyone can just buy one, or have one tuned just like that... that thing is a monster as far as 1.6 liter engines go.

well he was like the king of street racing way back when...so he probably just hit someone up he knew. He said he got it from a shop in tokyo or something probably (ryosuke 3rd stage). If he was as good as he really claims to be then hed have major hook ups from people who went into the business...you'd be suprised what a couple hook ups can get you in the car world...people can get a lot if you got connections

the motor shown there is an Altezza Racing motor with a 20v head...also 1.6...though i doubt its the version developed for 11000 rpm peak...still it just goes to show that bunta may have a motor that could have been stolen or falllen off the back of the truck so to speak fear2.gif

Right before Takumi blew his first engine, Bunta knew he was going to need a new engine for the 86. He talks with one of his friends who is connected with the car industry and who does engine swaps. Bunta already has the motor waiting before Takumi even blew it. When Takumi does blow his engine, Bunta senses it, and has a flat-bed to pick up takumi. Since Bunta knows Keiichi Tsuchiya, he probably has plenty of hook ups on parts.

Just so you know, the 20V came in the newer model FWD Trueno and Levin. They came with Individual Throttle Bodys from the factory. "Touring A" is just a racing class. The reason that motor was so rare was because those cars were still new when 2nd stage was being written and the swap wasnt very popular yet. The silvertop which is what was installed in Takumi's car produced 160hp from the factory and turned 8200 RPMs. The later "blacktop" 20v made 165hp at 8400rpm. so making an extra 80hp could be achieved with forged pistons, and a good set of cams and a full valve train to turn the RPMs. Its not unheard of for one to turn more than 11,000. Take a Silvertop 20v and pour about $2000.00 into it and you too can have the same engine. Formula Atlantic on the other hand does not use the 20v, it in turn uses the 16v platform. Yeah you can easily spend $10,000.00 but your also looking at 300-400hp all motor. Now THATS a true RACE ONLY engine. Most people prefer to build the factory bluetop or swap a high comp 16v from the ae92, simply because the 16v is just as capable of making power as the 20v for alot less money and at a higher level of availability of aftermarket performance and replacement parts. Hope this answers some of your questions.

So your saying that just because the motor make 160hp or 165hp that you can ealisy make 240WHP w/ only $2K N/A??. Thats BS. You have to take into consideration that the factory output of the 20v is 165hp to the flywheel, not the the wheels. Its probably has about 120whp. So even with a nice set of cams and high compression pistons and some fine tuning, you still wont get a 240WHP motor that revs up to 11K. I'm in the proccess of building a B18C (1.8 Integra GSR) motor that comes factory w/ 170hp and i have spent have spent a little bit over $2k and i still can only get 194WHP (which is pretty good in the Honda world) N/A. I now the motors are completly different but the concept is the same. It takes a lot of work and money to get a engine like Bunta got.

i SERIOUSLY hope PandaRedtrueno Left a 0 out of that guesstimate. A set of cams (at least the ones i would trust) cost nearly 1000 bucks for both. Youd need a standalone to go past the rev limiter, thats another 1000-1500. A valve-train kit (some sprigns wont cut it- talking under the bucket shim style), and ive honestly no idea how much for this. Adjustable cam gears, another 300 or so. Forged pistons, another 800 or so. Then include the work youd need to the insides of the block- balancing the conrods and crankshaft to properly handle those rpms. Cant forget the upgraded rod bears, and a pretty much -everything-bolt kit. Dry oil sump kit so you dont starve the engine. Custom tuned headers for your power band. Theres of course more, like how youd handle your ignition, what youd do about the flywheel, etc and etc.

Have fun revving a 20v to 11,000 (give or take) for only 2000 bucks- dont call me when you throw a rod.

btw; toyota only rated those engines at those power numbers, in actualy theyre probably about 150 for the silver and maybe 160 for the black top. They both have a rev limiter at 8400 rpms or so im told, but the silver gets it peak power at 7600 and the black at 7800.

Spend 10k however you want- you will NOT see 3-400 hp on "all motor". Not if youre running some bhoost' thats a different matter. 4agze block can handle around 300 hp stock (about 15ish psi).

these ratings arent whp. Takumis engine is 240 at the fly, typical of a group a engine at 11,000 rpms. Youll see about 220 at 9-10,000 - around 250 at 12,000. 250-260 is the highest ive heard of for these engines naturaly aspirated.

A 16v can have the same power potential as the 20v, but theres more to it then power numbers. 20vs typicly have a wider powerband due to the 3 inlet valves. the 20v swap has been going on since the engines came out- its not like you never saw it before ID.

Lastly; yes takumis engine is a ae101, aka sivlertop. My only guess as to why is because pretty much anything that made the blacktop differ from the silvertop in the first place is being replaced. Group a engines use custom conrods bolts crankshafts valvetrains etc etc.

I think i hit everything, if i rememebr more later ill update.
